Indian workers holding an ECR passport who travel to certain countries for work need emigration clearance from the Protector of Emigrants before they leave. ECNR passport holders generally do not.
Clearance confirms that the job, employer and recruiting agency are genuine. Without it, a worker can be stopped at the airport.
What to do
- Check your passport type on its first pages
- Ask your recruiter whether clearance applies for your destination
- Keep the clearance record with your travel documents

Rules change, so always confirm the current requirements with the official emigration portal or your recruiter.
